The World is one Country - BBQ Cook Off
Limerick City’s Annual Event - May 3rd & 4th 2008
Every May Bank Holiday Weekend Limerick embraces the River Fest, an event that attracts people from all over the country to come to the city and experience a carnival of events including Dragon Boating, Music Gigs and, of course, the main attraction the World BBQ Cook-Off, River Feast in association with the Irish BBQ Association, a non-profit organisation. This unique event incorporates teams from every corner of the world. Growing from strength to strength each year this culinary competition has made its mark as being the worlds largest international BBQ cook-off.
This two day event will consist of a first day that will host 80 teams from countries all over the world take part in an event that is based on the skills of cooking 3 different dishes on the barbecue - including Vegetarian Skewers, Chicken and Salmon. Each team is provided with Marquees, BBQs, cooking utensils, tables and chairs, charcoal and of course all the food, in return each team brings herbs, spices and sauces native to the country they are representing.
The location is Georges Quay in Limerick and the street is pedestrianised and awash with glorious colours, bunting, flags and music from all around the world, with the aromas of char-grilled cuisine creating an amazing carnival atmosphere.
The cook-off provides an opportunity for the some 20,000 people to samples of a variety of food from different countries while also enjoying the music and traditional costumes each culture has to offer. It also attracts the attention of local and national celebrities such as Brendan Grace, Andy Lee, Pat Shortt and a host of Munster and International Rugby Players.
The amateur competition will begins at 12 noon, on the Saturday of the May Bank Holiday Weekend and will hosts 3 different cooking categories; based on flavour, texture and presentation – Then an additional 3 categories are included for the ‘Happiest Home’, ‘The Best Dressed Home’ and ‘ Best Health and Hygiene Home’, with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. The professional ‘Silver Service’ Day will kick off at 12pm with the award ceremony at 4pm.
